James Crabb and Elision Ensemble give the Australian premiere of Enno Poppe Speicher at the Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music. Capital Theatre, Bendigo, Victoria. 2 September at 21:00.

Emma Matthews performs a programme of Shakespeare inspired works by composers including Verdi, and Gounoud with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra. Darwin Convention Centre. 3 September at 19:30

Richard Gill is the musical director of Sing South Gippsland2, a choral festival bringing choirs from the region together for workshops and culminating in a performance. Foster War Memorial Arts Centre, Victoria. 3 and 4 September.

Nicholas Carter conducts the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in James Ledger Hollow Kings, Mozart Symphony no. 40 and Brahms Piano Concerto no. 2 (Alexei Volodin, piano). Adelaide Town Hall. 9 September at 20:00 and 10 September at 18:30.

Andrew Goodwin performs at the Tyalgum Festival, performing works by Beethoven, Schumann’s Dichterliebe and more. The Festival opens on 9 September, with performances until 11 September. Genevieve Lacey gives a recital, Pleasure Garden, inspired by the story and music of the 17th century musician, composer, improviser and nobleman Jacob Van Eyck. Genevieve’s recital weaves music and environmental sounds through the intimate space of the Salon. Melbourne Recital Centre, the Salon. 22 September at 18:00.

Penelope Mills performs Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony and Carl Vine’s Wonders with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. Sydney Opera House Concert Hall. 22 September at 20:00 and 24 September at 14:00.

Paul Kildea conducts the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Britten Simple Symphony and Johnson over Jordan Suite, and Lyle Chan’s My Dear Benjamin – Serenade for Tenor, Saxophone and Orchestra (with Andrew Goodwin). QSO Studio, South Bank, Brisbane. 22 September at 18:30. This performance is part of the Brisbane Festival.

Simon Kenway conducts the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Somme100Film – The Battle of the Somme film with music by Laura Rossi (2006). Somme100Film is a partnership of UK organisations who are co-ordinating the performance of this film hopefully 100 times around the world during the centenary year of the Somme. Announcements

Emma Matthews – renowned as the finest Australian soprano of her generation – unveils her triumphant third album: Agony and Ecstasy.

Inspired by words from Verdi’s opera La traviata, the album presents a rich and timeless journey through the many faces of love, drawing on operas that employed the power of music to bring alive experiences of the heart as never before.

Agony and Ecstasy was recorded with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in December 2015, under the baton of conductor Andrea Molino by ARIA-Award-winning Tonmeister Virginia Read.  

Agony and Ecstasy will be released on the ABC Classics label on 2 September.
