Australia

Li-Wei Qin performs CPE Bach Cello Concerto in A major Wq172 and Tchaikovsky Variations on a Rococo Theme Op.33 with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. Deakin Edge, Federation Square, Melbourne on 2 March at 19:30, and Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre on 5 March at 14:30.

Cold Light with The Street Theatre. Tobias Cole: Ambrose. The Street Theatre, City West, Canberra. Opens 4 March, running until 18 March. Cold Light is adapted by Alana Valentine, based on the novel Cold Light by Frank Moorhouse.

Nicholas Carter conducts the ANAM Orchestra in a programme of Ades Three Studies from Couperin, Britten Sinfonia de Requiem op.20, Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis and Elgar Enigma Variations. South Melbourne Town Hall. 4 March at 19:30.

Robert Macfarlane joins Ludovico’s Band in Monteverdi: Love and War, featuring favourite madrigals from Monteverdi Eighth Book of Madrigals. The Salon, Melbourne Recital Centre. 7 March at 18:00.

La Traviata with Opera Australia. Emma Matthews: Violetta, joins the cast. Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House. 6 March, with further performances on 8, 11, 13, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, 30 March and 1 April.

At the Adelaide Festival: 

  • In Chamber LandscapesMiriam Gordon-Stewart and Calvin Bowman (piano and composer) give the world premiere performances of Bowman Over the Brow of the Hill, and Steve Davislim and Anthony Romaniuk (piano) perform Schubert Winterreise. UKARIA Cultural Centre, Mount Barker, South Australia. 9 March at 19:30 and 11 March at 17:00.
  • Nicholas Carter conducts the Adelaide Symphony in Prokofiev Peter and the Wolf (Miriam Margolyes, narrator) and Britten The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (Miriam Margolyes, narrator), Janacek The Cunning Little Vixen Suite and Borodin Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor. The Australia Piano Quartet perform Mahler Piano Quartet in A minor and Brahms Piano Quartet no. 2 in A major, Op. 26. The Salon, Melbourne Recital Centre. 10 March at 18:00.

The Japanese Princess with Lyric Opera of Melbourne. Robert Macfarlane: Kornelius. Chapel off Chapel, Melbourne. Opens 11 March at 19:30, with Robert’s further performances on 14 March at 20:00, 15 March at 20:00 and 17 March and 18 March at 21:00. 

Emma Pearson and David Wickham (piano) give a recital, Heart’s Dance for SwanSongs, including works of Mahler and Strauss. Perth Town Hall. 12 March at 15:00.

My Fair Lady with Opera Australia and Gordon Frost Organisation. Katherine Wiles: Mrs Boxington. Lyric Theatre, QPAC, Brisbane. Opens 14 March, running until 23 April before transferring to the Regent Theatre, Melbourne in May.

Jeremy Kleeman performs some of his favourite operatic arias in Opera by the Lakes for Gippsland Opera.  Nyerimilang Heritage Park, Nyerimilang, Victoria. 19 March at 13:30.

The Princess and the Pea with Victorian Opera. Olivia Cranwell: The Princess. Playhouse, Arts Centre Melbourne. Opens 22 March, with further performances on 23, 24 and 25 March.

Genevieve Lacey joins Paul Grabowsky (piano), Eugene Ughetti (percussion) and Erkki Velthein (cello) as Paul launches 48 Ways of Looking at Bach, exploring Bach’s Preludes and Fugues numbers 1 to 8 in this performance and responding with inventions and reflections on JS Bach.The Salon, Melbourne Recital Centre. 24 March at 18:00.

Andrew Goodwin, Jane Sheldon, Anna Fraser, David Greco (singers), Siro Battaglin and Phillip Shovk (pianos) perform works of Hindemith, Dan Walker, Martin Wesley-Smith, Grainger, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms at the Bowral Autumn Music Festival. 24 March at 19:00.

Carmen with Opera Australia for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. Sian Pendry: Carmen, Michael Honeyman: Escamillo, Luke Gabbedy: Escamillo, Natalie Aroyan: Micaëla. Opera on Sydney Harbour Mrs Macquaries Point. Opens 24 March with performances every night except Mondays, until 23 April. There are two casts, alternating each night. Luke and Natalie are performing at the odd numbered performances (1, 3, 5…), Sian and Michael performing at the even numbered performances. 

Sally-Anne Russell performs Works including Purcell When I am Laid in Earth from Dido and Aeneas, Elgar Where Corals Lie from Sea Pictures op. 37, She Moved through the fair (traditional) for Opera in the Arboretum. Pearl Beach Cromellin Native Arboretum, NSW. 25 March at 15:00.

Jeremy Kleeman performs in Opera in the Paddock with Opera North West. Program includes works by Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Wagner, Bizet, Offenbach, Kalman, Johann  Strauss Jnr and selections from Lerner and Loewe’s  Camelot and more..
