Australia

Roland Peelman conducts the Sydney Chamber Choir in Dido and Aeneas – a program of Monteverdi Lamento d’Arianna, Litany of the Blessed Virgin, Lamento della Ninfa, Gesualdo Madrigals and Purcell Dido and Aeneas. Great Hall, The University of Sydney. 7 October at 19:30. 
 
Sally-Anne Russell performs Brahms Alto Rhapsody, and Sally-Anne Russell, Robert Macfarlane and Christopher Tonkin perform Haydn Nelson Mass with the Victoria Choral, Ballarat Choral Society and Art of Sound Orchestra. St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne on 7 October at 19:30, and St Patrick’s College Chapel, Ballarat on 8 October at 14:30.

  • Gordon Kerry’s The Snow Queen. Richard Mills: Conductor. Olivia Cranwell: Gerda. The Cube, Wodonga, Victoria on 3 and 4 November at 19:30. 

The Healers. Andrew Goodwin: The Wounded Soldier. The Healers is a pocket opera, about the role of women in WW1, how they healed men, broken by violence, through love. It is a program of Australian premieres of works by composers who served or volunteered in the medical services, along with works by soldiers who were wounded or killed. Music by Chaminade, Moeran, Boulnois, Roger-Ducasse, Coles, Halphen, Hahn, Gurney, Kelly, Bliss, Nadia and Lili Boulanger plus Schubert and Sibelius. Aldo Di Toro gives a lunchtime recital of Italian and English Songs, with Thomas Johnson (piano) for West Australian Opera. Cloisters Square, Perth. 11 October at 12:30.

Li-Wei Qin performs Saint-Saens Cello Concerto no. 1 with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Perth Concert Hall, Perth, Western Australia. 12 October at 11:00, 13 and 14 October at 19:30.

Two Weddings, One Bride with Opera Australia. John Bolton Wood: Philippe. Playhouse, Sydney Opera House. Season 3 opens 12 October, running until 22 October. Performances Tuesday – Sunday each week, with two performances on Wednesdays.

Andrew Goodwin performs Elgar The Dream of Gerontius with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House. 19 October at 20:00 and 21 October at 14:00.

Genevieve Lacey Curates and performs in Taking Flight, with Paul Kildea conducting the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Taking Flight is inspired by the song of the Pied Butcherbirds of Central Australian deserts to the Whooper Swans of the Arctic Circle, Genevieve Lacey creates a listening experience that collapses time and expands our sense of space. From Jean-Féry Rebel’s 18th-century depiction of chaos preceding creation, through to the World Premiere of Hollis Taylor’s Absolute Bird, this is a lyrical program of poetic imaginings.
