“…This was another thoughtful pairing by Australia Piano Quartet of one of the great monuments of the past with contemporary innovation, and shone unexpected light on romanticism then and now”.
Peter McCallum, Sydney Morning Herald, June 12, 2017
Mahler Piano Quartet in A minor, Melbourne Recital Centre, Salon, March 10 2017
“…the balance between instruments was perfect. This was a mesmerising reading of a captivating and elusive work; a consummate performance “.
Lisa MacKinney, Limelight Magazine, March 17 2017
Wigmore Hall Recital September 2016
“the musicianship of these four eminently gifted and finely balanced players was a characteristic that overcame criticism; the players' ensemble and oneness of conception were admirable characteristics which combined to produce a performance that did the composer full justice. “ Mozart K453
“Moving and ebullient (especially in the finale) by turns, this was an account of great perception “ Brahms C minor quartet
Robert Matthew-Walker, Musical Opinion Quarter, January – March 2017
"...Rarely have I been so impressed by a new ensemble. A combination of formidable pedigree of training, flawless technique, impressive musical intelligence, profound sensitivity and performance élan leads me to draw the analogy of there being evidence here of the ingredients of a true vintage wine which can only get better with age.”
David Barmby, Arts Hub December 2015
Australia Piano Quartet (APQ) brings together four of Australia’s most respected and dynamic instrumentalists.
The players’ passion for the piano quartet stems from their love of the extraordinary repertoire and the unique qualities of the ensemble itself: a synthesis of the finely blended sonority of a string trio, the soloistic qualities of each string voice and the orchestral power and virtuosic brilliance of the piano.
The quartet presents reinvigorated interpretations of canonic masterpieces, unearths neglected piano quartet works of past and present and adds new life through the commissioning of new works by Australian composers. Commissions to date have engaged leading composers including William Barton, Ross Edwards, Paul Dean, Elliot Gyger, Elena Kats-Chernin, Lachlan Skipworth, Jack Symonds and Felicity Wilcox.
The APQ's 2016 and 2017 Utzon Room 3 concert Series comprised a dynamic, innovative and exciting series of recitals for chamber music afficionados and classical newcomers alike. They also appeared in the Salon Series at Melbourne Recital Centre and for Sydney Mozart Society.
Australia Piano Quartet is in its seventh year as Ensemble in Residence at the University of Technology Sydney. Recent performance highlights include their Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre debuts (London), a residency at Shanghai University, live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and Foxtel Arts (Helpmann Awards), and appearances at Holywell Music Room Oxford, the Australian Embassy Paris, and Queensland Conservatorium Brisbane.
Their ground breaking 2016 collaboration with Dr. Jordan Nguyen and cerebral palsy sufferer Jess Irwin featured on ABC 7:30 Report, and was further developed in 2017 on TedX Sydney and SBS Insight.
